"Live Your Way"

Have an open bed in your room? Why not fill it with a friend or keep it for yourself?
It’s a simple move that benefits you, your friend, and our housing community. Whether you’re filling a vacancy in another room or choosing to live with a friend, you’re helping us make the most of our space and we want to thank you for it. Keep in mind, there is a high probability that the vacancy in your room will be filled for Spring 2026.

What are my options?

When there's an open bed in a room, it can be filled in a number of ways. Here's a quick rundown of possible next steps:

  1. Request the space is filled by a specific person. In this option, you can request a re-assignment to a specific open space. This gives you the most control over the new arrangement and who you live with.

Note: Students who select this option are eligible to receive the promotional incentive outlined below in the Additional Details section.

  2. Buy out the open bed space(s). At times, University Housing permits students to buy out the vacant bed(s) in a room. This allows students to have more space in a room by having fewer people assigned to it. More information about cost can be found below in the Additional Details section.

  3. Take no action. This option opens students up to a few possibilities going forward:
    1. You may receive a randomly-assigned roommate at any time. This will be the case for most students.

    2. You may not receive a new roommate assignment. Some students who take no action may not be assigned a roommate and continue to have an open bed space in their rooms. In this scenario, you are not charged an additional fee, but because you have not reserved the vacant space, you must keep the other half of their rooms clear and prepared for a new roommate assignment at all times.

Relocation Promotion

Whether you're filling a vacancy or choosing to live together, if you opt to complete option #1 outlined above, you’ll receive:
  • $100 to the UC Bookstore added to your student account, and
  • Waived Spring 2026 application fee for new housing students (a $150 value).

Who is eligible for the promotion?

Any student who participates in the option #1 outlined above will receive the promotion benefits! If you are moving rooms or having your friend move-in with you, you will both receive the $100 credit to the UC Bookstore!

Space Buy-Out

Students interested in option #2 above should consider buying out the vacant space in their rooms to guarantee that no one will be assigned there this year.

For example, a vacant second bed bought out in a two-bed unit essentially converts a multiple occupancy space into a single.

Another example, an empty bed in a four-person quad can be bought by the other three students, making the space a triple.

What does space buy-out cost?

The charge to buy out a bed is equal to half the bed's annual cost, pro-rated by the amount of the academic year remaining.

For example, the fee to buy out a second bed in a two-person room for the full spring semester would cost 25% of that bed's annual cost.
