Communiversity partners with Sew Valley to revive the art of sewing

Sew Valley co-founder and Director of Operations Rosie Kovacs says sewing is a dying trade, just like carpentry or plumbing. Without the knowledge of how to construct garments and other textiles, most people are reliant on other people or imports. Specific techniques and ways of sewing could be lost forever if the knowledge isn’t passed on. Old techniques combined can even be combined with new materials for fresh trends and designs.  

This is one of the reasons Sew Valley began last year. A few creative people began the nonprofit because they realized that the design community in Cincinnati is huge, however, the resources for designers, to build their brands was non-existent, especially those working with sewn products.

Sew Valley is a creative space for entrepreneurs and designers in the Ohio Valley and beyond, providing the growing fashion community with resources and technology to build scalable, sustainable and responsible brands. Through their flexible work space, Sew Valley provides opportunities for membership, contract services, and education.

To help spread their mission, Sew Valley will team up with Communiversity this fall to offer two courses in their West End creative space: Intro to Industrial Sewing and Introduction to Knitting.

Intro to Industrial Sewing will cover the concepts of industrial vs. domestic sewing, why the two are vastly different, and when you need to know one vs. the other. Students will learn how to use a straight stitch machine, zig zag machine, three-thread serger, and iron. They will also leave the class with a canvas tote bag and pillow with a zipper. All skill levels are welcome.
