NPR: Clothing Exchange for transgender youth opens in Cincinnati
Gender transition often also involves a complete wardrobe change. A new clothing exchange in Cincinnati allows transgender youth to trade in their old attire for outfits that suit their style. Cincinnati journalist Ann Thompson interviewed Tristan Vaught and Nancy Dawson, the founders of Transform, a charity that provide transgender youth clothes at no cost.
Thompson also spoke with Dr. Sarah Pickle, associate professor of family medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and UC Health physician. Pickle said living an authentic life translates into living a healthy life. Most of her patients are transgender or gender diverse. For instance with transgender women or individuals undergoing hormone therapy there are questions about bras.
"They don't know the first thing about buying some of the most sensitive clothing, and you can imagine going into a clothing store where you don't know if you'll be safe to have that type of personal experience," said Pickle. "It could really be daunting."
