AP: Trump puts global religious freedom in the political fray
UC faculty member Andrew Lewis comments on Trump administration's stance on religious freedom
In an article released by the AP on Feb. 6, 2020 , “Trump puts global religious freedom in the political fray,” numerous experts in politics and religion weighed in on how “religious liberty has been politically polarizing domestically, often pitting pro-Trump conservative evangelicals against progressives who warn that the issue is used as a shield for discrimination.”
Among the experts cited was Andrew Lewis, an associate professor of political science at the University of Cincinnati who is often sought out for his illuminating commentary on politics and religion. Lewis provides an assessment of how the Trump administration's public support for religious freedom at the State of the Union address, and subsequent National Prayer Breakfast, can be perceived as conflicting to the support of religious freedoms through current policies, such as immigration restrictions.
The AP article was picked up by many additional news outlets, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, Yahoo News, Seattle Times and San Francisco Chronicle.
