UC launches Choose Ohio First mentorship program
The University of Cincinnati recently launched a pilot of the Choose Ohio First Scholarship mentoring program.
During the kickoff event in January, sophomore UC students met with their mentor matches, employees from GE Aviation. The purpose of the program is to help the students become professionally competent.
Attendees played Super Bowl trivia in mentoring pairs, learned about program design and spent time developing a mentoring communication framework.
One of the program’s major highlights is the inclusion of a meaningful field experience for each student. These experiences equip students with deeper, more purposeful connections to their desired profession.
Participants commit for one academic year in this mentoring model, which supports monthly contact between mentor and student following prescribed topics.
The Choose Ohio First Scholarship Program is an Ohio initiative under the leadership of the Governor’s Office of Workforce Transformation. It is designed to significantly strengthen Ohio’s competitiveness within science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine.
Program funding provides competitive scholarships that aid in meeting college costs while giving awarded scholars expanded and unique programming in their discipline. It is part of a strategic effort to promote professional preparation, retain Ohio residents and bolster Ohio’s economic strength by ensuring a ready workforce for STEMM-related industries.
