Cincinnati Magazine: CCM alum Pamela Myers never stopped working
Q & A with the first graduate of CCM's BFA Musical Theatre program
Most Musical Theatre students at UC's College-Conservatory of Music have heard the story of the program's first graduate, Pamela Myers. Shortly after claiming her BFA, she packed her things and boarded a Greyhound bus for New York City to star on Broadway.
Stephen Sondheim and Pamela Myers.
Her first Broadway audition was for a new musical written by a young composer about life in the Big Apple. Myers sang a country song, "Little Green Apples," and got the part — Marta in the debut production of Stephen Sondheim's Company.
She performed the solo piece “Another Hundred People." Company received a (then) record-breaking number of 14 nominations, including one for Myers as Best Featured Actress in a Musical. The show would earn six 1971 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. After that impressive debut, her career took her from New York to Los Angeles and back to Cincinnati as she continued to work on stage and screen.
Cincinnati Magazine recently featured Myers in a Q & A that dives into her experience leaving Cincinnati and shares the journey she has taken throughout her career. She gives a shout out to a few of her favorite Cincinnati theaters, Ensemble Theatre and Playhouse in the Park, and praises the Queen City for supporting arts organizations impacted by the pandemic.
"People don’t realize how much the arts contribute to the economy, how many people work in the arts," she says to Cincinnati Magazine. "It’s a huge industry in the city — in any city."
