PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
By Joseph Hanreddy and J. R. Sullivan
Adapted from the novel by Jane Austen
Susan Felder, director
Marriage is an inevitable fact of life for the five Bennet sisters — Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty and Lydia. With the family estate passing to their closest male cousin, their only hope to advance in life is to find a rich and single man — and one has just arrived in the form of the very handsome and very well-off Charles Bingley. The kindhearted and beautiful Jane seems poised to make a match, but must contend with her overly zealous mother, his snobbish sister and a slippery social ladder. When Bingley's taciturn friend Fitzwilliam Darcy shows an interest in the opinionated and spirited Elizabeth, the situation becomes more complicated than either of them expect. The fire and wit of Jane Austen's classic 1813 romance shines through in this vibrant new adaptation.

THE LIGHTNING THIEF
THE PERCY JACKSON MUSICAL
Book by Joe Tracz
Music and Lyrics by Rob Rokicki
Adapted from the book The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
Rachel Stevens, director
Jessica Harris, choreographer
Rosamund Hencinski, music director
As the half-blood son of a Greek god, Percy Jackson has newly-discovered powers he can't control, a destiny he doesn't want and a mythology textbook's worth of monsters on his trail. When Zeus' master lightning bolt is stolen and Percy becomes the prime suspect, he has to find and return the bolt to prove his innocence and prevent a war between the gods. He must travel to the Underworld and back; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and come to terms with the father who abandoned him. Adapted from the best-selling book The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan and featuring a thrilling original rock score, The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical is an action-packed mythical adventure for audiences of all ages.
Content disclaimer: Strobe lights and other bright and flashing light effects are used in the performance. While fantastical in nature, this play contains sequences of simulated violence and themes of grief and loss.

Enter her fairy godmother, who provides a ticket to the royal ball. The girl meets Prince Charming and they fall in love. OLD AND NEW SURPRISES OF COMMON TIME: HOW BACH AND VIVALDI USED COMMON TIME DIFFERENTLY AND WHY WE CARE
John Paul Ito, Associate Professor of Music Theory from Carnegie Mellon University
Baroque composers often used common time as pairs of 2/4 measures, with beats one and three equally strong and each just as good for starting a melody. If a theme in a Vivaldi concerto shifts between starting on beat one and beat three, this is business as usual, not something to “bring out” in performance. This is old news for musicologists, but fresh for many performers. What the musicologists don’t know is that statistical analysis puts Bach much closer to modern practice than Vivaldi. Vivaldi’s shifts are arbitrary, but Bach’s have meaning within larger patterns — patterns which performers can observe and inhabit.

THE PERFECT LUKE-ALIKE: MUSICAL RHYMES AND REFERENCES IN THE SKYWALKER SAGA
Frank Lehman, Associate Professor of Music Theory from Tufts University
Everyone loves spotting musical connections, especially in film music, where dense intertextuality abounds. But influence-spotting alone doesn’t equal musical insight. Everyone loves spotting musical connections, especially in film music, where dense intertextuality abounds. But influence-spotting alone doesn’t equal musical insight. Nowhere is this truer than in John Williams’ Star Wars scores, long subject to claims of borrowing from Stravinsky, Holst, Korngold and others. This talk revisits such comparisons — often overstated and under-analyzed — while shifting focus to referentiality within and across the Skywalker Saga. Beyond the familiar topic of leitmotivic recurrence, I explore subtler echoes shaped by distinctively cinematic constraints and affordances. In doing so, I pressure simplistic ideas about similarity and rehabilitate George Lucas’s oft-mocked but musically fertile notion of the “rhyme.”

Estimated run time: 2 hours, plus a 15-minute intermission
Location: Patricia Corbett Theater
Tickets: $36 adult, $20 student, $15 UC faculty/staff, $10 UC student, $5 CCM student; group discounts available. Buy tickets online.
