Mary C. Mahoney, MD, professor of radiology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and chief of imaging services at UC Health, has been named a 2025 Gold Medalist by the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) — the organization’s highest honor.
Awarded annually by the RSNA Board of Directors, the Gold Medal recognizes individuals who have rendered extraordinary service to the science of radiology. Since its establishment in 1919, only about 200 radiologists worldwide have received this prestigious distinction.
“Receiving the RSNA Gold Medal is an incredible honor that I accept with deep gratitude,” said Mahoney. “It reflects not just my own journey, but the support, collaboration and shared commitment of so many who have shaped my career in radiology.”
A career of vision and impact
Mahoney has dedicated her career to advancing breast imaging and championing patient-centered care. At UC, she played a pivotal role in establishing the Advanced Imaging Core Lab and the multidisciplinary breast center within the UC Cancer Center. She also served as Chair of the Department of Radiology for more than a decade, where her dedicated leadership and transformative initiatives significantly advanced the department’s clinical, research, and educational missions.
A graduate of the UC College of Medicine, Mahoney completed her residency and fellowship training in diagnostic radiology at UC Medical Center, where she served as chief resident. She has been chief of imaging services at UC Health since 2016.
Nationally, she is recognized as a leading advocate for ensuring radiologists are meaningfully engaged in the patient experience. Her leadership extends across the field of radiology. Mahoney joined the RSNA Board of Directors in 2014 and has chaired several key committees, including the Public Information Committee and the Patient-Centered Radiology Steering Committee. She also serves on the American College of Radiology (ACR) Board of Chancellors and has held leadership roles in the Society of Breast Imaging, the American Roentgen Ray Society and the American Board of Radiology.
A legacy of scholarship and service
Mahoney is a prolific scholar and speaker, having authored more than 90 peer-reviewed articles, 15 book chapters and two books. She has delivered more than 285 invited lectures around the world and has been recognized with numerous honors, including being named to Cincinnati Magazine’s “Top Doctors” list and the Cincinnati Business Courier’s “Health Care Heroes.”
With this recognition, Mahoney joins an elite group of radiologists whose contributions have shaped the field and elevated the role of radiology in patient care. Her career stands as a testament to excellence in academic medicine, leadership and service.
