Spectrum News: UC Welcomes College of Medicine Students Back to Campus
First-year medical students stay optimistic despite training in the midst of a pandemic
First-year medical student Dalton Hartwick of Cicero, Indiana, shared his thoughts about attending medical school in the midst of a pandemic at the University of Cincinnati with Spectrum News reporter Camri Nelson. Hartwick is one of 182 incoming first-year medical students attending UC.
He visited the campus during the first week of August to greet a small group of his classmates — no more than 10 students per group to adhere to small group gathering requirements — and to receive the ceremonial white coat from the College of Medicine. The first day of class for medical students began August 10. Much of their semester will involve virtual learning, but small in-person sessions are still permitted with appropriate personal protective equipment/masks and proper social distancing. The medical students have begun an in-person first-responder training course that allows students to learn CPR and other skills that will necessary if they encounter an emergency scenario.
Abbigail Tissot, PhD, assistant dean for admissions and recruitment for the College of Medicine, told Spectrum News that the College of Medicine has definitely boosted its support resources to make sure medical students are getting the assistance and answers they will need to begin their training despite COVID-19 restrictions.
