Spectrum News: How to reduce risks of security camera privacy invasions
UC professor says simple actions can improve cybersecurity
Individuals can take steps to protect themselves from privacy invasions, such as ones that led to a more than $5 million settlement with Ring, an Amazon-owned security company, Spectrum News reported.

The Federal Trade Commission is sending payments to Ring users whose devices potentially were used to violate their privacy.
Jacques Bou Abdo, an assistant professor in UC’s School of Information Technology, said patches in the Ring system and customers using weak login credentials contributed to the vulnerabilities.
To reduce risks, Bou Abdo said, individuals shouldn’t use the same login credentials for multiple accounts and should avoid accessing malicious content.
“Threats or vulnerabilities or risks are not going to be completely dealt with, but you reduce the chances of those things happening,” he said.
