Mandatory co-op is a commitment—full-time, year-round after your first year, alternating with classes (no summer breaks typically). Start/end dates align with UC’s calendar but vary by employer (usually a week before/after classes).

  • Pay: Averages $11,220/semester, set by employers. Varies by major, industry, experience, and location. See average hourly wages (based on 2024–2025 student reports).
  • Location: UC students work with over 1,700 organizations both across the U.S. and worldwide. Although the University does not provide direct assistance with relocation or housing, many co-op employers offer support in these areas. Additionally, faculty advisors may facilitate connections with alumni or other students in the local area to help ease the transition. DAAP students can also take advantage of this web site created by DAAP Tribunal.
  • Co-op Fee: Pay a reduced co-op fee (not full tuition) to maintain full-time status for aid/insurance. The university charges this fee to support the administration, career services, employer relations, and quality assurance necessary to support students.
  • Compliance: You are required to adhere to all rules, policies, guidelines, and requirements—to the extent permitted by law—of your co-op employer. Failure to comply could prevent you from completing your co-op requirement and graduating.
  • Holidays/Schedule: While on co-op, students usually observe the employer's holiday schedule rather than the university's.

UC Housing While on Co-op

UC supports your co-op journey from Fall through Spring! Live off-campus during work terms if needed, but plan to return for academic ones. No fees for co-op-related cancellations, and we’ll try to reassign your preferred hall (though not guaranteed).

Quick Tips:

  • Submit co-op proof and checkout form with return details/roommate prefs.
  • Opt out of meal plans easily via petition or change request.
